AI is changing more than the way companies build applications. It is also changing how security teams have to protect their infrastructure.

Broadcom is responding with a set of updates for VMware Cloud Foundation, focused on security, automation, and private cloud environments. The changes affect VMware vDefend and VMware Avi Load Balancer, adding new tools for threat prevention, malware analysis, API protection, and AI-assisted security operations.

What has Broadcom changed

One of the main additions is a simpler way to roll out security controls in vDefend. The new vDefend 1 2 3 workflow takes teams through three stages. It first looks at the current threat posture, then recommends policies for shared services such as Active Directory and DNS. Those policies can later be extended across development, production, and other network zones. Broadcom says this approach could cut deployment time from months to weeks.

How does the update handle malware

Not every organization can send files to a public cloud for analysis. Some have strict privacy or regulatory requirements, while others operate completely disconnected networks. The updated vDefend platform brings malware sandboxing into the local environment. Security teams can examine files without moving them outside their infrastructure.

The update also adds support for air-gapped environments. Threat intelligence can be downloaded separately and transferred into disconnected systems when needed.

Why is API security getting attention

APIs are now part of almost every modern application, including applications built around AI workloads. Avi Load Balancer is adding native API protection for virtual machines, VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service, and AI workloads.

The feature combines API protection with a web application firewall, giving teams another way to protect application interfaces without depending on as many separate security products. As modern applications rely on more connected services, protecting their APIs has become increasingly important.

Where does AI fit in

Broadcom is also putting AI assistants directly into vDefend and Avi. These assistants can help with configuration questions, troubleshooting, and remediation. The vDefend assistant can also find duplicate firewall rules and help clean them up.

For security teams, the idea is less about replacing existing controls and more about making routine security work easier to manage.

What else is changing

Broadcom has also added automation for organizations moving away from older firewall setups. Its updated vDefend and Avi Conversion Tool can translate rules from agent-based firewalls into native vDefend policies. This could make migration work less manual for teams dealing with large rule sets.

The company has also reported higher throughput across several security and load balancing components. These figures come from Broadcom’s own internal testing, so actual performance will depend on the deployment and hardware used.

What does this mean for VMware users

The changes point to a broader shift in private cloud security. Organizations are dealing with AI workloads, more APIs, disconnected environments, and increasingly complex network infrastructure at the same time. Security tools therefore have to cover more ground without making operations harder.

Broadcom’s latest VMware updates bring several of those tasks into the existing security and networking stack.

Conclusion

AI is creating new security challenges while making existing infrastructure more complicated to manage. Broadcom’s latest VMware updates are aimed at both sides of that problem. With new threat prevention workflows, local malware analysis, API protection, AI assistants, and migration automation, VMware users get more security capabilities without having to build every piece separately.

For organizations running private cloud and AI workloads, that combination could make security operations easier to manage as their environments continue to expand.
